Given below are some things used instead of a particular modern thing in the past,ie its predecessor .All you have to do is to identify the thing. Remember to keep it simple

1)Chew sticks, tree twigs, bird feathers, animal bones and porcupine quills were a few used throughout the world.In India leaves of different plants specially banyan and mango were used. At last horse hair fixed on a stick was used before a patent was issued for the modern version.
